This album was one From the Creative World of Stan Kenton. The album featured an instrument mistakenly reported to be of Kenton's own design, the mellophonium (a mellophone that has been partially unwrapped to form a bell forward instrument), although his use of it brought the instrument to the fore. Kenton incorporated a four-man mellophonium section from September, 1960 through November, 1963, spanning 11 albums (subtitled From the Creative World of Stan Kenton). The instrument was designed and manufactured by C. G. Conn. Other companies also manufactured the instrument, but in different physical configurations than the Conn design that Kenton employed.

Recorded 13 March 1961 (2 sessions) and 20 March 1961 (2 sessions) at Goldwyn Studio, Sound Stage 5, Hollywood, CA.

ST 1533 on rear cover and spine, ST-1533 on labels.

Use of IAM in triangle as Scranton Pressing Plant ID was from 1963 to 1973, succeeding the use of the 'Anvil symbol.' Label style suggests early to mid '60's.

Rainbow labels with Capitol logo center justified along with The Romantic Approach and Stan Kenton And His Orchestra above spindle hole. STEREO is printed in bold font to the left center of spindle hole.
