While today it is common to use the term 'classical' to encompass all European art music from the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries, it is more accurate to break down classical' music into a handful of chronological periods: Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Impressionistic. In preparing this recording, I chose compositions from each of these. The selections by Bach, Vivaldi and Handel are Baroque compositions, while those by Tchaikovsky, Chopin, Brahms and Bizet belong to the Romantic period. The opening track, Maurice Ravel's beautiful 'Pavane for a Dead Princess' is a treasure of French Impressionism. Only Mozart's 'Eine Kleine Nacht Musik' can rightly be called Classical.
In arranging these pieces, I used a wide variety of instruments within these relatively small ensembles. Most of these instruments - strings, woodwinds, piano, guitar and harp - are easily recognizable. The lute and harpsichord, both' traditional baroque instruments, may be less familiar to some listeners. - Dirk Freymuth
