Sol Aurorae
First light, awakening, creation, inspiration, rebirth, aura, fusion of colours, hope, truth, simplicity, serenity... love.
For me the dawn sun is a continuous reminder of vitality and of inquiry; it is contact and communication with our fundamental emotions.
This album emerged from a deep need to record and to share a part of my music- making, that is rooted in the culture of Cyprus – in the sounds of which she is composed and the words that portray her.
It consists of compositions in}luenced by the musical traditions of the eastern Mediterranean, traditions in which I have immersed myself both as a musician and as a devoted listener.
The Cypriot dialect is central to these pieces, giving both meaning to the sound and shape to its expression.
It is a great honour and pleasure to have made this recording with wonderful musicians and dear friends, who have shared my vision and given form to it, in their own individual ways:
Michalis Kouloumis, violin and viola; Giannis Koutis, oud and fretless guitar; Meir Gassenbauer, neys; Michalis Messios, double bass; and guest musicians Zacharias Spyridakis on lyras and Efrén López Sanz on the kopuz.
Finally, I would like to thank those who accompanied me on this journey, from the initial idea through to its materialisation, and those who worked with me on the musical and visual material. I am especially thankful to my parents, my sister, and my close friends.
I am deeply grateful to those who inspired both the music and the texts that make up Sol Aurorae.
