A member of C86 bands The Loft and Wishing Stones. In the 80s he wrote for Sounds under the nom de plume Bill Black, and at NME as Bobby Surf. From the 90s onwards he has written under his own name for, amongst others, Q Magazine and GQ (where he is deputy editor).
