Freed was born in Waynesboro and graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1987. He designed album covers and posters for bands as well as fronting his own groups, which included The Victims, Mutant Drone, Mudd Helmut, Dirtball, The Shiners and Mag Bats.
